5 Best Cities for Staycations

5 Best Cities for Staycations

Travelling to far off lands is always high on my priority list, but as a travel addict, I need to find ways to satisfy my thirst for a mini-break without breaking the bank. A staycation is just the ticket.  This is the perfect way to unwind for a few days and take time out to explore.  There are some great little places to uncover right on your own doorstep (depending on where exactly your doorstep is.)   Most cities have plenty of activities and hidden adventures you can discover just by exploring.

Here’s five of the best cities in the US for staycation options.

Orlando, FL

Orlando, Florida

Orlando has to be number one on the list.  It is the theme park mecca — ranging from Disney World (all four parks) to SeaWorld to Universal Studios to Legoland.  In addition to the world-class theme parks and attractions Orlando has a vibrant arts and cultural community.  There is never a shortage of museum, art viewings, and tours in Orlando. Arts and cultural venues in Orlando are often free or discounted and have something for everyone to enjoy.

Orlando’s natural beauty and landscape make it a great place for soaking up the sun and enjoying the outdoors.

Coca Cola Bear Cpca Cola World in Atlanta GAAtlanta, Georgia

There is SO much to do in the Atlanta area.  For starters, Atlanta houses the headquarters for Coca-Cola Company, CNN, TNT, and TBS. That’s not even mentioning the city has one of the most impressive zoos (Atlanta Zoo) and aquariums (Georgia Aquarium) in the world.  It is home to the College Football Hall of Fame and it’s also the birthplace of Martin Luther King, JR.

Atlanta is a city full of unique little neighborhoods.  For example, known as the “Heart of the Arts,” Midtown Atlanta is bustling with art and energy.  It is home to the Fox Theatre, High Museum of Art and the inventive world of the Center for Puppetry Arts.

San Francisco CA Golden Gate BridgeSan Francisco, California

One of the best parts of living in the Bay Area is the abundance of destination worthy beaches, hiking spots and small towns just a short drive away. Take a mini road trip to Occidental, Pescadero or, if you’re feeling ambitious, Placerville or Nevada City.

But San Francisco itself has lot to offer.  Skip the car or bus for the day and do on a walking tour of the city. Explore familiar neighborhoods like you would a new neighborhood in a European city; duck into every shop, stop at a cafe for a bit and spend an hour people watching in a local park before making the trek to the next neighborhood.

Honolulu HI Hula DancingHonolulu, Hawaii

There’s no need to wait for a visit from Mainlanders to enjoy beach-side tropical cocktails, delicious food, Hawaiian games and arts and crafts.  One of the best things about living in Honolulu is the opportunity to enjoy the vast beauty, recreational, and cultural activities of Hawaii, all within a very short distance from home.

Looking for a great day trip out of the city?  Fly to the Big Island to tour the small, boutique farms’ orchards, watch the steps from roasting to grinding, and sample the nuances of beans grown in different areas.  Hawaii has its own specialty crop known for smooth flavors and bold finishes. Kona coffee beans are a rare commodity grown only in North and South Kona.

Visit the other tourist islands—Oahu, Maui and Kauai.

San Diego CA Pacific Beach BoardwalkSan Diego, California

With a beautiful year around climate, San Diego is a perfect destination for the outdoor oriented family.  There is truly something for everyone in San Diego.

World Famous San Diego Zoo is a tourist spot that cannot be overlooked.  Balboa Park is not only an attraction for tourists but also for locals.  With its handful of museums, gardens, trails and architectural beauty, it is a perfect place to make a few moment.  Spend a day or night in Old Town, which hosts some of the best Mexican food San Diego has to offer.  You can’t visit San Diego without having a beach day. All of the beaches are distinctly different and every one of them amazing in their own way.

These are some of the best cities for staycations but you can find great ideas for mini-vacations anywhere you live.  Make an excursion to nearby places or a quick trip to the local mall.  Why take a 10-hour drive or a three-hour plane ride when your best vacation is the staycation in your backyard?
