Things to do in Portland Maine with Kids:

Make a trip to the Children’s Museum and Theater! The museum encourages hands-on exploration for the little ones. There is a specific play area for children 3 years old and under. This momma loves those sort of areas because when my kids were younger I didn’t have to worry about the bigger kids. Now that my kids are the bigger ones I don’t have to worry about them plowing over the little guys. There are areas focused on science, a replica of a fire truck for kids to explore, a car repair shop, and a lobster boat. Those areas are just on the second floor! You could spend a whole day at this museum.

If you have a train lover in your family, you have to make sure that you head to Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company & Museum. Take in the history of the Maine railroad system from the later part of 19th century. or hop on the train for a ride! Each train ride lasts about 35 minutes.

For some classic family fun head to Palace Playland, this beachfront amusement park is located on Old Orchard Beach. This is about 25 minutes from Portland, which really isn’t that bad of a trip! If you go later in the day you can stick around for the fireworks at 9:45 pm. The fireworks occur each night.

While you are in Old Orchard Beach, why not stop in and visit the Maine Wildlife Park! There are over 30 species of animals native to Maine to learn about. In addition to seeing the animals up close and personal, you can head indoors and let your kids do some hands-on learning!

You can’t go to Maine without visiting a lighthouse! The Portland Head Light is one of the most iconic lighthouses in Maine! Visiting hours are from 10 am – 4 pm and admission is very reasonable $2 for adults and $1 for kids.

Have you ever wanted to go on a deep-sea fishing trip but just never thought that the kids would enjoy it? The Fish Lips Kids Fishing trips might just be the trip that will work for the whole family! The trip is geared towards making it an enjoyable experience for your kids!

When you are in Maine, you have to make sure that you treat your family to fresh seafood. The place to get some fantastic grub is at Fishermen’s Grill in Portland. The best part about this place is that the prices are extremely reasonable, which is always a plus in our book!

If you are looking for an awesome place for brunch or lunch, plan a stop at Bibo’s Madd Apple Cafe. From traditional brunch menu items to lasagna lobster roll, you will find something unique on the menu. Just a note the menu changes so make sure you check it out closer to your planned trip.

Where to stay in Portland, Maine

There are several great hotel options in the Portland area as well. Like the Westin Portland Harborview, Courtyard by Marriott (with a Starbucks in the lobby, yay coffee!) or the Embassy Suites. There are also quite a few awesome looking B&B’s but I am always afraid that my kids will break something.

No matter where you go or end up staying you will love your trip to Maine! If you do go make sure you tweet us and tell us all about the trip!
