The Magic House, St. Louis Missouri

The Magic House, St. Louis Missouri

On a recent fall break to Saint Louis, I was looking for fun places to take my 5 and 8-year-old when I stumbled upon the Magic House.

The Magic House is a children’s museum that works to engage children with hands-on learning and interactive fun. It is situated in a large Victorian mansion in the heart of St. Louis and includes two separate wings.

Hands-on fun at the Magic House

One of the most intriguing features is a large climbing tree down the middle that can provide a chance for little climbers to explore safely. Anytime I can let my kids climb while we are visiting a museum, I am happy! Too often I have to wrangle the kiddos and find myself stopping them from climbing.

There are countless opportunities for pretend play in areas such as a grocery store, vet clinic, auto repair shop, baby nursery, bank, pizza shop construction area and more. There are several props, costumes, and activities to engage children so they feel like they are truly immersed in the experience.  It’s also a relaxing day for us parents as you can just camp out and watch them play until they are ready to move on to the next exhibit.

STEM at the Magic House

At the Magic House, there is also a focus on science, math, and STEM. My math-loving son really liked the large math path with many different areas for all age levels. He particularly liked the giant calculator and the geometric puzzles. The bubble room was a favorite of my daughter, my youngest child. It had unique ways to make bubble fun including making a bubble dome! The bottom floor of the museum is an entire area with a mock government display. Our kids loved sitting in the on the bench with their gravel and robe ruling on important cases. There is also an oval office and I’ll be honest my little girl looked right at home as President!

The staff was friendly and helpful with any questions we had. You can find a nice little café located on the main level as well as a gift shop. There is a courtyard and an outside area with additional activities that looked like fun. Sadly, it was too cold during our visit to get to explore the outside attractions.

The Magic House is a great stop for families with younger children.
